Veterans History Project

Motivated by the desire to honor our nation's war veterans for their service and to collect their stories and experiences, the U.S. Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP). Congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland is one of the original sponsors of the legislation that created the Veterans History Project, which was signed into law by President Clinton in October 2000.

The law called upon the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to collect and preserve the collected oral histories along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps, photos and movies of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them. This is a nation-wide program whose mission is to educate and preserve our country's memory about the stories, reminiscences and histories of those who were involved in these wars. We are looking to document every individual, regardless of his/her contributions to America's war efforts. This includes men and women, volunteers, support personnel, war industry workers and military personnel from all branches of the service.
