Primary Resource Traveling Trunk
Educational tool available for Elementary School teachers in 3rd-5th grades. Traveling
Trunk focuses on the creation and everyday life in the 1911-1913 U.S. Army Aviation
School in College Park, MD. The Primary Resource Traveling Trunk offers students the
opportunity to learn about the history of Maryland and Aviation, by examining reproduction
artifacts, reading old newspapers and interpreting old photographs.
Some of the great activities and lessons offered in the Traveling Trunk:
- Learn new vocabulary.
- Build a 1911 Aeroplane Hangar.
- Create a picture poster.
- Be a Reporter.
- Guess what the enclosed aviation related objects could be and how they were used.
- Learn the Geography of College Park, MD.
- Write a newspaper article.
- Dress as an aviator, or a mechanic.
- Hold a debate between the Wright Brothers and the U.S. Army.
Students may become newspaper reporters, aviators, or even the
Wright Brothers themselves, all the while learning how to use
research and primary resources!
