On July 25, 2018, Seat Pleasant municipal officials kicked-off the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Highway (MD 704) Streetscape Enhancement PAMC project with planning staff, consultants, and State Highway Administration representatives. To advance the economic development and healthy living goals of the city the objective of this project is to obtain 30% engineering design plans for MD 704 improvements that accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and cars. Within the existing State right-of-way there is excess land from ‘Road Diet’ lane reductions. This allows for the redesign of the roadway to encourage safe, non-vehicular uses of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. Implementation will create a more user-friendly streetscape; a neighborhood street where people will want to stop to shop, eat, and exercise (walk or bike). This design plan can be used to request funding to construct the recommended improvements.
On November 27, 2018 consultants facilitated a stakeholders’ (SHA, municipal staff, M-NCPPC) meeting to present and discuss options. Project staff briefed the City Council on January 7, 2019. A community meeting was held on March 28, 2019 at the Seat Pleasant Community Center to obtain citizen input on the various streetscape design options. The consultant’s final report was submitted July 26, 2019.
