Scope of Collections
The College Park Aviation Museum collects, preserves and interprets aviation objects, photographs, and archival items for both display and/or research purposes. The mission and primary focus of the museum is to educate the public through these objects. The museum also collects full-size aircraft that relate to the events and activities of the College Park Airfield from its founding in 1909, through the efforts to save the airport in the 1960s-70s, to today.
The museum collects aviation and aviation-related items associated with the people, activities and events significant to the long history of the field. It also collects early aviation objects in general, since much of the history of early military and civilian aviation relates in some way to the history of the College Park Airfield.
The current museum building was designed to acceptable atmospheric and light standards, as well as security provisions. Items in the collections and archival storage areas are available to the public under strict staff supervision only. The museum is in the process of conducting a collections inventory and updating its catalogue. Once this update is completed, the museum will make the inventory available to visitors through an MS Access database.
